The Drive To Stay Alive program was founded by Dr. Timothy B. Skraitz. Dr. Skraitz became increasingly concerned about the safety and welfare of not only his patients, but the community in general after he completed his extensive training at the San Diego Spine Research Institute. Dr. Skraitz wants to help the younger drivers prevent and avoid motor vehicle accidents so that they may avoid sustaining painful injuries. Hence, the Drive To Stay Alive program was born.
Drive To Stay Alive, Inc. was formed in March of 2007 and is the parent company of the Drive to Stay Alive program. Each year during the busy prom, graduation, and impeding summer months the Drive To Stay Alive event is held at Peters Township High School. At this event, young drivers are given behind the wheel training to manuever driving courses such as swerve to avoid a collision, braking courses, slalom courses, and tailgating courses. There is also classroom instruction where the young drivers engage in coversation and learn more about the different techniques.
Drive To Stay Alive is funded entirely through community donations, meaning the participants do not have to pay to partake in the event. Through 2007's successful fundraising, Drive To Stay Alive Inc. was able to purchase S.I.D.N.E (Simulated Impaired DriviNg Experience), a vehicle that simulates the delayed reaction that a driver would experience if he/she were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. S.I.D.N.E. will be put to use at each and every future Drive To Stay Alive event.

“So the next question is, has it produced results? For me at least, yes. About a month ago, my son (who I MADE take the class) has an accident. Driving home from school, there was a line of cars at the McMurray/Valleybrook traffic light. When the light changed, everyone, of course, proceeded until the light changed again and on the yellow, the car in front of my son slammed on the brakes. This was also a high school student. My son’s reaction was to swerve to the left to the empty lane but he still scraped the whole right side of his car of the left rear corner of the other car. The damage to his car is about $1400, we don’t know the cost on the other car but the dad is expecting to fix it himself so it’s considerably less.
The avoidance maneuver the kids learned is what my son credits for his preventing a full-on rear end collision that would have totaled both of the cars plus cause airbag deployment and whiplash. Both cars had a passenger so this could have been a real mess and incredibly expensive involving fire and ambulance besides police. Instead, it was just police and not even a fully reportable accident, both cars drove away.
He thanked me like he never had before for making him take the course.”
